About Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia, or man breast, developed glandular tissues, making them feel uncomfortable or self-conscious. It is a condition in which boys and men develop breast tissues due to a hormonal imbalance or high levels of estrogen.
Gynecomastia develops slowly and there are four stages:
- Grade 1 Gynecomastia: The breast has only slight enlargement and a small lump can be felt in the nipple or areola.
- Grade 2 Gynecomastia: The breast tissues expand to the chest width and include coverage of the pectoral muscles. The enlargement may still not be prominent.
- Grade 3 Gynecomastia: The breasts are moderately enlarged and can be easily seen from clothes. The tissues also become firm.
- Grade 4 Gynecomastia: This is the worst stage of gynecomastia where the chest looks like breasts and affects the physical and psychological state.
In addition to the above explanation, gynecomastia is also divided into true and pseudo-gynecomastia. In this type of true gynecomastia, only breast glandular tissues are present. This is different from this, in pseudo gynecomastia, only fat tissues are present in the chest and make the person’s chest look like a female’s breasts.
Gynecomastia Diagnosis
To distinguish between real and pseudo gynecomastia and gynecomastia itself the doctor may do the following:
- Medical History: The doctor will ask you about any symptoms you have, medical history, any medications or substances you may be taking that might have caused the condition. Some drugs that contain estrogen can cause gynecomastia are anabolic steroids, anti-androgens, or medications.
- Physical Exam: The doctor will first start with the physical examination to check for abnormal growth of tissues, including the shape, size, and feel of the breast tissues. The test is called the pinch test. The gynecomastia pinch test is a physical examination where the examiner will grab the breast tissue between the thumb and fingers to look for any lump or mass. The physical exam may help to distinguish it, but the exam may also be inconclusive. If so, further testing will be recommended for the individual.
- Blood Test: A complete blood panel test may be ordered by the doctor to check on the hormone levels.
- Imaging Test: In order to establish the level of growth and avoid the chances of breast cancer, the doctor may ask for mammography, CT scan, MRI scan, or ultrasound.
- Biopsy: If the doctor may suggest a biopsy test if he/she thinks that the breast tissue growth is cancerous.
These tests help the plastic surgeon to select the most appropriate approach to gynecomastia Surgery.
Who is a candidate for gynecomastia surgery?
Surgery is appropriate for anyone who has some amount of gynecomastia, Kaplan explains. Outside of that, people usually need to meet the criteria for any elective surgery.
- Not having a blood disorder
- Not going immune-suppressing medication
- Not using nicotine and tobacco products before surgery and until recovery is complete
- Also managing any underlying health conditions
- Being able to miss the requisite time from school, work or other commitments to recuperate having one or more people who can be caretakers during your recovery
What is the treatment for gynecomastia?
If you are one of those who do not require or desire treatment for gynecomastia, that’s totally fine. But if you decide you want it treated, your doctor will likely recommend the following solutions according to the source of your problem:
- Stopping or switching a medication: It is advised to inform your doctor about any non-prescription medicines that you are taking, including dietary and herbal supplements. Do not stop taking prescription medication until and unless the doctor advises so.
- Treatment of the underlying condition: Treatment of the cause of the condition, such as a tumor or hypogonadism, may also lead to gynecomastia.
- Gynecomastia surgery: Some people decide to go for the surgery for gynecomastia (male breast reduction) to remove the extra breast tissue. This is a voluntary cosmetic surgery.

What will aftercare and recovery from gynecomastia surgery entail?
Gynecomastia is typically an outpatient surgery.
In most cases, “once the patient has recovered from anesthesia, they’re able to return home with a responsible caretaker that same day”
You may experience symptoms commonly associated with anesthesia, such as:
- Feeling groggy, confused, or foggy
- Generalized muscle aches
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Itching
- Patients typically experience pain together with discomfort at the surgical area. Your clinician may prescribe medication to help manage these effects.
- The patient needs one to two weeks for recovery before returning to work according to him. Patients need to use compression vests for at least thirty days.
- The compression vest functions to reduce discomfort while protecting the surgical area and minimizing swelling.
- Patients need to stay away from soaking activities and swimming for two weeks after surgery and must avoid strenuous exercise for one month after surgery.
- Most surgeons suggest patients stay away from sunlight and perform scar massage and use scar cream and fractionated laser treatments to reduce scar visibility.
What are the possible side effects or risks that may occur after gynecomastia surgery?
The recovery after gynecomastia Surgery will take around 2 to 4 weeks. The exact duration will vary for each patient depending on the extent of surgery and the patient’s healing abilities.

- According to experts the possible complications after surgery include prolonged numbness together with fluid accumulation and skin color abnormalities.
- Gynecomastia surgery carries rare yet possible risks which are specific to this procedure. The procedure comes with a small chance of creating a sunken nipple appearance together with nipple loss.
- The return of nipple sensitivity and sensation usually happens within weeks or months following surgery yet some patients experience permanent nipple numbness after surgery.
