What is Eyelid Lift Surgery?

Blepharoplasty surgery is a common surgery for Eyelid Lift. The surgery is done to enhance your eyelids look. It helps minimize flabby skin, bags around the eye, and wrinkles around the eyes, hooded eyes treatment and giving you a youthful and reinvigorate look. People trust this process not just for enhancing looks but also to improve eyesight when skin dangles around eyes.

Why it is performed

Blepharoplasty can be suitable for:
  • Loose or sagging upper eyelids
  • A significant amount of skin on the upper eyelids that causes impairment of peripheral vision
  • Excess skin on the lower eyelids
  • Puffy lower eyelids (bags under the eyes)
  • Blepharoplasty can be done together with any other procedure such as brow lift, face-lift, or skin resurfacing.
  • Insurance coverage may depend on whether it is the type of surgery that is going to repair an abnormality that causes loss of vision. Cosmetic surgery itself is not typically covered by insurance.

Diagnosis & Evaluation for Droopy Eyelid

A thorough assessment would take the patient’s medical history and an examination of the patient with droopy eyelids by a plastic surgeon to identify the best treatment procedure. The doctor would then explain to the patient the symptoms and how long he/she has had them. Based on the preliminary diagnosis, the plastic surgeon will refer the person for further evaluation to the ophthalmologist.

Tests done at an ophthalmology clinic to check for the eye health of the patient include the following:

1. Comprehensive Eye Exam

This test would bring out underlying problems causing sagging eyelids and then interfering with vision. It would also look for the presence of excess skin, fat deposits, muscle weakness, asymmetry, and the position of the eyebrows. In case a surgery is recommended, a comprehensive eye exam also proves helpful in identifying the best surgical approach.

2. Visual field test

If a person has serious eyelid sagging or ptosis affecting vision, visual field testing may be conducted. The test measures how much visual disturbance an object may cause in terms of peripheral vision under the obstruction by the eyelids.

3. Microscopy

Also performed mainly for determining the status of the eyelids, cornea, conjunctiva, sclera, and iris. If the patient will go through the surgery, this test also measures marginal reflex distance (MRD) and studies the position of the eyes.

4. Schirmer’s test also Tear Production Test

This test is meant to check on the patient for having dry eyes. Possibly, he or she may consider that the patient has dry eyes before the doctor., as it might worsen the symptoms.

5. Myasthenia Gravis Tensilon Test

This is where the drug called Tensilon is injected into the eyelids to improve muscle strength; if it does improve the strength, Myasthenia Gravis, a neurological condition affecting the muscles of the upper eyelids, is present.

6. Eyelid Photography

Pictures of the eyes will be taken from different angles and would document the current appearance of the individual. This can be used for visual reference during surgical plans and shows the results of eyelid surgery before and after.

7. Ocular Motility Test (Eye Movement Test)

This test assesses how well the eye is able to make movements. Patients are asked to track the examiner’s finger through six positions of gaze: left upper lateral, superior, right upper in a right oblique anterior; supra and lateral in the left oblique postero-inferior. In this manner, the examiner assesses whether motility is full in every gaze direction.

8. Peripheral Vision Test

In the presence of marked eyelid ptosis, peripheral vision tests are ordered by the eye physician. Such tests form part of a full eye examination but are also done separately. Usually, an automated perimeter test is performed, wherein a machine is used for checking side vision. Besides this, either a confrontation visual field test or a tangent screen test may be conducted for peripheral vision assessment.
