What are Lipomas & Their Removal
- Lipomas are made up of fat cells and are mostly found on people with family history of Lipomas, as it is suggested that there is a genetic component.
- They lumps situated beneath the skin which is usually soft, movable and painless. A lipoma can develop anywhere on the body, however are most often found on the neck, shoulders, back, arms, and thighs.
- The reason for Lipomas is still unknown. It is also sometimes associated with other medical conditions such as adiposis dolorosa and Gardner’s syndrome.
- Most of the time you do not need to go through any kind of treatment for lipomas until and unless you feel any kind of pain.
- However, if needed, lipomas can be taken out through medications and surgical procedures like excision, liposuction, and minimal invasive techniques.
The symptoms and causes
What are the symptoms associated with the lipoma?
Generally, lipomas are not much discomforting unless they exert pressure on an exposed nerve or develop adjacent to a joint, which brings along some discomfort. However, many people who have a lipoma do not notice any symptoms.
Lipomas are usually:
- Encapsulated: They do not spread to tissues surrounding them.
- Painless: Yet, some lipomas give pain and discomfort depending on their site and size and arterial involvement.
- Round or oval-shaped: Fatty lumps of rubbery tissue are generally symmetrical.
- Moveable: They reside just below the surface of the skin and they move when they are being touched.
- Under 2 inches in scope: In some instances, lipomas may grow larger than 6 inches wide.

Causes of lipoma
The cause of lipoma is still unknown to health care providers. It is inherited (comes down in families). You have a greater tendency to develop a lipoma when there is a case of one in your family.
There are some conditions that give rise to multiple lipomas on the body. Conditions giving rise to lipomas are:
- Dercum’s disease: Rare disorder that gives rise to painful lipomas, which usually develop on the arms, legs and the trunk. It is otherwise called adiposis dolorosa or Anders’ syndrome.
- Gardner syndrome: It is a form of a disorder titled familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) in which lipomas are caused along with a variety of abnormal features.
- Hereditary multiple lipomatosis: Also known as familial multiple lipomatosis; it is the inherited type of the disorder.
- Madelung’s disease: It is usually seen in men taking excess alcohol. Also known as multiple symmetric lipomatosis, it causes the formation of lipomas around the neck and shoulders.
Lipoma Diagnosis
When deciding for a treatment for lipoma, it is advised to consider other conditions that may have similar characteristics. Lipoma can easily be identified as they have some specific features.
Some features of Lipoma are epidermal inclusion cysts, sebaceous cysts, neurofibromas, dermatofibromas, liposarcomas, etc.
The Lipoma has distinct characteristic features that are easily recognizable. Detection of lipomas is commonly done on the bases of a physical examination and medical history.
However, sometimes it may get difficult to distinguish lipomas from other conditions. If that would be the situation, the following diagnostic tests will be performed to confirm lipomas:
- Imaging technology: This test is helpful in determining the size, location, depth and consistency of the lipoma. Lipoma can be assessed from some of the usual practices, which are Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Computed Tomography scans.
- Biopsy: Here, if the surgeon believes that it is a malignant tumour (liposarcoma) in the disguise of a lipoma, then biopsy may be required. A piece of the tissue is taken and examined under the microscope to determine whether there are cancer cells and to distinguish between a benign lipoma and a liposarcoma.
Lipoma Treatment Options
Lipoma treatment is not always necessary depending on whether painful or increasing in size to discomfort. Options for lipoma treatment or removal are as follows.
- Observation: If small, painless, and of no functional or cosmetic importance, the lipoma can be followed without treatment. Usually, they are benign and slow growing, so if they do not cause any inconvenience, they can be best left to follow-up.
- Steroid Injections: Non-surgical management of lipomas to diminish the size of the lesion and symp- toms such as pain and swelling. This is not nearly as effective as surgical removal, and there is a high probability that the patient would need quite a few injections to shrink the lump to a manageable size.
- Liposuction: It involves making a small incision followed by sucking out the fatty tissue using a tube. Depending on the characteristics as well as the location of the lipoma, the actual treatment options will differ. While surgical removal is the most common option for lipoma treatment, the operation of choice would differ in different cases.

Lipoma Removal Surgery
Lipoma Removal Surgery is performed through various techniques, such as conventional excision, minimal excision, etc.
In most cases, lipoma surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, which means that the patient is discharged from the hospital on the same day.
Types of Lipoma Surgery
Different types of lipoma surgery are explained below:
- Conventional Excision: This surgery is done by the expert surgeons with the help of local anaesthesia. They start with a little slit in the skin over Lipoma. It has been cut carefully to open and separate tissues and also remove Lipoma intact.
- Minimal Excision: This process is done by small incision as compared to the other technique. The cyst is gently compressed and pushed out through the slit with the help of surgical tweezers.
- Endoscopic Mucosal Resection: Endoscopic surgery is a new minimally invasive surgery, which uses a small, flexible tube – an endoscope – to access the body’s cavities. The scope has a light and camera lens that help in seeing the lipoma and then removing it.
- Liposuction: Liposuction which can be used as a single technique or can be combined with excision to remove lipomas. This technique involves making a small slit near the lump and then inserting the liposuction cannula. The cannula is used to suction out the fatty tissues of the lipoma.
After thoroughly diagnosing the condition and its situation, the doctors decide the most suitable type of lipoma surgery that can be done.
Conclusion
Millions of people have lipomas. Though they are quite annoying and ugly, they usually do not become troubling. Most lipomas do not even require treatment. But if a lipoma brings pain or you worry about its size or location, consult with your provider. Usually, such things are removed during an outpatient procedure, meaning you may go home the same day. Lipomas seldom regrow after removal.
